Mobile publisher to produce classics
The retrogaming market is being pushed forward by various compilations of retro games for modern video game consoles and on-demand services such as Virtual Console. Classic arcade games are regular best sellers for mobiles. DotEmu aims to give a second life to more classic games by targeting today high-end mobiles in addition to Web browsers. Contrary to traditional mobile porting, the end- result game is an exact replica of the original. Enhanced functionalities such as touch screen or
instant saving, well suited for mobile devices, can also be added. On top of that, it will be possible to play directly into a web browser a limited version of the game.
DotEmu has signed numerous licenses with publishers and authors, and will release its first mobile products during Summer 2008. In order to reduce the Time-To-Market and to ensure better quality products, DotEmu has chosen the RabbitFactory middleware, edited by BitRabbit Ltd
Romain Tisserand, CTO of DotEmu said “While looking for a mobile OS porting solution, RabbitFactory appeared to be the most flexible, professional and easy to use middleware. It really enables us fast track porting of classic games, and to focus on our core business”.
Michael El Baki, CEO of BitRabbit said “Emulation of retro games is one of the most intensive and difficult process, and porting such technology to Smartphones is a real challenge. Our multiplatform and highly optimized APIs offer DotEmu the robustness and performance needed for that task. By combining our two technologies, mobile gamers will be able to enjoy lots of classic games”.

Wii Update – 1 VC, 1 WiiWare
You want fireworks? Look no further than the Wii™ Shop Channel, where vibrant bursts of classic gaming action and fresh WiiWare™ content will help fill your living room with a flurry of ooohs and ahhhs. Puzzle-game mavens can enjoy a wild new addition to the WiiWare library, while the Virtual Console™ brings a truly classic fighting game to the fore. For an added holiday-week blast, fans of the WiiWare hit FINAL FANTASY® CRYSTAL CHRONICLES®: My Life as a King™ can enhance the action with new Add-On Content.
Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:
WiiWare
Magnetica™ Twist (Nintendo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): The classic puzzle game Magnetica is now available on WiiWare , putting its own unique “twist” on the puzzle-game experience. You’re surrounded by marbles, marching slowly but surely down a track. Use a launcher (piloted by a Mii™ of your choice) to shoot marbles with matching colors and wipe them out before they reach the end of the track. Control couldn’t be simpler, as all you need to do is twist the Wii Remote™ controller to aim and press the A button to shoot. And the game play remains as addictive and deep as you’ve come to expect in Nintendo’s puzzle games, with five varied play modes, advanced mechanics such as the ability to lob marbles, and a never-ending supply of combos. This definitely isn’t your typical game of marbles.
Virtual Console
FATAL FURY 2 (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen-Animated Blood, Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released in 1992 by SNK, FATAL FURY 2 is the second installment in the renowned fighting-game series. In addition to Terry, Andy and Joe, who appeared in the original game, another five distinctive fighters gather from around the world to compete for the championship title. Also newly added are stage-specific hazards and the ability to perform desperation attacks when a character’s strength is low. These particularly deadly techniques create the chance for a come-from-behind victory achieved with a single strike. Moreover, the innovative two-line battle, which proved popular in the previous version, also has been radically enhanced. Pressing the weak-attack and strong-attack buttons simultaneously enables players to move their fighters to another line themselves, or to launch an attack that pushes opponents back to another line. This game mechanic, unique to this title in the series, allows the player to take advantage of the depth of the screen and create even more exciting bouts. Can you prove yourself the king of fighters again?
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith first impression
Just picked up GH:Aerosmith. I’ve only had some experience with the wife and kids playing Easy mode for the first 8 songs, but it’s great to have new GH songs to play.
After all I have read and heard about the participation, i was a bit disappointed to find out that the GH house band performs some songs. But. And there’s a but here…. the songs that Aerosmith does are sung by them, and the fact that they mo-capped all songs is evident. It’s cool to see some of what they do while playing songs, and you can see some moments that you do see live on stage, like Joe and Steven interacting while playing a song.
The easy mode definately seems to be ratcheted down a notch, my 7 year old is playing songs like a pro, and my 4 year old can almost carry a whole song, which is an improvement over the GHIII easy mode. Maybe they’re just better at using the guitar?
That’s it so far, more review coming later on. Back to playing!
Pixel Mine adds Secondhand Lands to lineup
Developer Callipygian Games to Utilize the Pixel Mine Portal and Micro-payment Transaction System
AUSTIN, TX – June 27th, 2008 - Pixel Mine, Inc. and Callipygian Games, LLC. announced today that Callipygian Games will utilize the Pixel Mine portal and Pixel Mine’s internal micro-payment transaction system for its debut title, Secondhand Lands. Secondhand Lands, an edgy fairy-tale MMOG, will be the fourth title on the Pixel Mine Portal.
Since the company’s inception in 2007, Pixel Mine has focused on providing original and innovative content. The Austin-based developer plans on adding three to four games to the portal each year, some of those coming from third party independent developers such as Callipygian Games, LLC.
Bobby Thurman, founder of Callipygian Games and lead developer on Secondhand Lands, confides, “We chose to work with Pixel Mine because they offered us the best value for our company and our players. As an independent developer it is very difficult to find a distribution deal that gives us a package with everything we need to manage accounts and handle payments. Also, we are excited to be working with another Austin company; this town is rich with talent and services tailored for game creation.”
“Having published independent titles ourselves, we know that the deck is stacked in favor of the publisher,” Pixel Mine President David Reese explains. “Our goal with the Pixel Mine Portal is to provide a distribution model, economy, and community management service which allows the independent developer to focus on their game but still retain ownership of the IP and receive the majority of the revenue for their hard work.”
